Connect With Councillors - Councillor Martin Rooney

Updated: Oct 13

By Councillor Martin Rooney, Council Leader, West Dunbartonshire Council

I’m delighted to be able to support the Improving lives “Connect with Councillors” initiative.

Local Councillors are committed members of the public who care passionately about the communities we serve.  While we may be aligned to different political parties, we all share the same values and goals of delivering the best for our communities, constituents and their families. For this reason, Councillors generally agree on the majority of key priorities.

The primary role of all Elected Members is to set the political direction of the Council, to scrutinise performance, and to make policy decisions which can positively affect services, our staff, businesses, community groups, residents and their families.

We live in the communities we serve, which means we use the same local services as everyone else whether its schools, leisure facilities or parks. We use the same range of health services and travel on the same roads and public transport as everyone else.

Another key part of our role is to engage with residents through our ward surgeries, consultations, events, social media, email, telephone and written correspondence. We also provide direct access through political campaigning activities and are happy to arrange public meetings and support local events on topics that can impact the quality of life of our residents. The details of each Councillor’s ward surgeries including contact details are displayed in local libraries, schools and community centres and listed on the Council’s website.

All Councillors work on your behalf and we are always keen to hear and help you with any issues you have, wither it’s a personal issue or something that is affecting your wider community.  While we might not always get the outcome that you would like, please be assured that we represent your issues accurately for you to get a fair hearing resulting in you get the answers to your queries and access to the services that you are entitled to and we will fully support you during the process.
